Daniel Stolzenberg, associate professor of history at UC Davis, will give a talk titled “What Was the Orient of Early Modern Scholars? 'Oriental Languages' and the Roots of Academic Orientalism," examining the emergence of the conceptual category of “oriental languages” between the 16th and 18th centuries to answer questions about what “oriental studies” meant to early modern intellectuals.
