Abstract:

This talk discusses the presenter’s experience in building an applied cybersecurity R&D program at the Berkeley Lab from scratch over a period of about ten years, centered around supporting the Berkeley Lab's core institutional mission of “bringing science and energy solutions to the world.”  The talk discusses challenges with doing the "right" applied research, which often requires highly nuanced understandings of the problems and what solutions might be considered truly useful and acceptable by the end users.  In presenting those challenges, the talk goes into specific details into a handful of past and present research projects, including those pertaining to secure high-performance computing systems, high-throughput research networks, and cybersecurity for energy delivery systems.
