Professor Gerhard Richter will speak about his new work "Buried Possibility: Hannah Arendt and Theodor W. Adorno on Tradition." Richter was a member of the German faculty at UC Davis from 2005 to 2011 before moving to Brown University, where he is professor of German studies and comparative literature and a core faculty member in the graduate certificate program at the Cogut Institute for the Humanities.

Richter is the author of seven books on European critical thought, among them Thought-Images: Frankfurt School Writers’ Reflections from Damaged Life (Stanford University Press, 2007) and Afterness (Columbia University Press, 2011).

Richter's talk, co-sponsored by the Program in Critical Theory and the Department of German & Russian, is drawn from his forthcoming book Thinking with Adorno: The Uncoercive Gaze (Fordham University Press, Spring 2019).
