The Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of French and Italian present "The Poetry of Time in Guillaume Apollinaire's Calligrammes" with Dr. Jonathan Strauss (Miami University of Ohio).

To mark the centennials of the end of World War I and the death of avant-garde French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, we can turn back to the troubling “Calligrammes” or picture-poems that Apollinaire wrote in the last years of his life. The poems’ apparent childishness seems grotesquely unsuited to the horrors, tragedies, and sorrows that they ostensibly depict. Yet they are profound reflections on time that can be compared to the work of Apollinaire’s contemporary, the phenomenological philosopher Edmund Husserl. In the tension between pictures and words, the createdness and aesthetic plasticity of time emerge and the poems reveal themselves as elegies for the world itself.
