Professor, Department of Sociology
Director, East Asian Studies Program
UC Davis

Xialing Shu gives a talk on the institution of marriage in China, which has changed little in spite of educational levels, urbanization, women’s labor force participation and economic development. In her related book project, Shu uses complex and large-scale national data to provide a multi-dimensional analysis of the Chinese patriarchal family system and to illustrate the ways the Confucianism-based system evolves in the transition from socialism to modernization and globalization.
