Padura has received the National Prize for Literature, Cuba's national literary award, and in 2015 the Premio Principe de Asturias de las Letras of Spain, one of the most important literary prizes in the Spanish-speaking world. The event starts with a 30-minute film about Padura and his work, followed by a panel discussion.
