The Neglected Addict: Understanding Stigma, Students and Recovery

The Stigma-Free UC series presents a discussion of the impact of stigma on students who are in recovery from substance abuse — a group that is too often invisible. Ann Cheney of the UC Riverside School of Medicine will present research into how stigma shapes the identities of these students and plays out in their use of behavioral health services. Cheney will also share self-care strategies for staff members who provide treatment for students in recovery. Cheney, an assistant professor in the School of Medicine's Department of Social Medicine, Population and Public Health, is a medical anthropologist whose work places the voice of the community at the center of scientific inquiry,
