The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum introduces fee-based workshops where people can experiment with some of the techniques exhibiting artists are using. Angela Willetts, M.F.A. ’16 leads “Abstract Responses to Nature”: Try a new take on plein-air painting. Begin with a visit to Susan Swartz's exhibition, Breaking Away, 2006-2018, to see how the artist abstracts the natural landscape. Then immerse yourself in natural environments as you explore abstract responses to nature in the arboretum. Experiment with paint application and intuitive mark-making — dripping, wiping, glazing, spilling and layering — to capture the infinite energy and texture of the natural world. Bring a picnic. Acrylic supplies included in fee. Ages 16 and up.

Two other workshops are scheduled this summer: “Drawn From Nature” (July 21) and “Cyanotype Lab” (July 28). See separate listings. If you sign up for all three workshops, you will receive a 10 percent discount. Advance registration is required; call 530-752-8012 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
