Two summer exhibitions, running concurrently:

  • Breaking Away, 2006-2018 — Painter Susan Swartz describes her work as “lush surfaces sculpted from the subtle accretion of color.” This survey of her recent work demonstrates a newfound synthesis and complexity in her approach to abstracting the natural landscape.
  • You broke the ocean in half to be here — Andrea Chung's exhibition includes a cyanotype-print installation (pictured) focusing on lionfish, a nonnative, predatory species that has proliferated recently in the Caribbean, conjuring a fantastic underwater world while offering a potent allegory of colonization.
"Opening" event: 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 15, as part of the museum's Summer Season Celebration. It will include a conversation at 3 p.m. with the artists, "This is Our Time," discussing how they see the world and their place as artists, reflecting and bringing focus to how the world is seen. See separate listing.
