Claudia Leal is an associate professor at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá in the Department of History. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley. Her research is focused on the transition from slavery to freedom in the Pacific coast of Colombia. In her recent book, Landscapes of Freedom, Building a Postemancipation Society in the Rainforests of Western Colombia (University of Arizona Press, 2018), Leal discusses how environmental conditions and management affected the experience of freedom. Her interest is in the relationship between armed conflict and environments.
