Students from around the country have submitted ideas for startups that would make the world a better place while being economically viable, and now the winners and organizers will come to campus to continue the conversation.

A panel discussion and awards reception will be held Thursday (Nov. 9) for Innovators of Tomorrow, a competition organized by Popular Science, UC Davis and Toyota. The 5 p.m. event at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts will feature a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered Toyota Mirai on display in the lobby, refreshments and a program in the Vanderhoef Theater.

The panel discussion will pose the question: “How do you make a difference and make money at the same time?” The panelists are: Chancellor Gary S. May; Toyota Motor North America Senior Engineer and UC Davis alumna Jackie Birdsall; and XYZ Venture Capital Partner Ross Fubini. It will be moderated by Popular Science Managing Editor Corinne Iozzio.

Competitors were asked to submit videos pitching their startup ideas, and winners Ann Nguyen and Jade Olivia Woods, both high school students, will present their ideas and be presented with scholarship awards.

The event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are required to innovators@ucdavis.edu.
