George Lewis, the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University and author of A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music (2008), examines the place of African American culture within American experimentalism. The lecture concludes with a recording of Lewis’ musical composition, Merce and Baby, which
premiered at the John Cage Centennial Festival in 2012. The piece was composed with reference to Cage’s Cheap Imitation (1969), and to choreographer Merce Cunningham’s work Fast Blues, performed in 1946 with
drummer Warren “Baby” Dodds.
