UC Davis’ Kurt Rohde (pictured), who holds the Jan and Beta Popper Endowed Professorship of Opera, composed the music for this one-act opera in which Death, in the guise of a beautiful woman, comes to claim the life of a cellist, but instead falls in love with him. Thomas Laqueur conceived of the opera, which he based on José Saramago’s 2005 novel of the same name, and wrote the libretto. The opera is a production of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and is directed by Matilda Hofman, principal conductor of UC Davis’ Empyrean Ensemble and director of the Early Music Ensemble.
