The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art will not use any old “ribbon” for the museum’s grand opening. Instead, the Manetti Shrem is inviting community participation — from campus and Davis, to Sacramento and Napa County — to make a 1,500-foot-long site-specific “sculpture” that will loop around the museum’s exterior and the surrounding area during the week leading up to the grand opening, Sunday, Nov. 13. Alumna Lisa Rybovich Crallé, M.F.A. ’11, is leading the project, on a museum commission, and she’s enlisting the public’s help to hand-paint the hundreds of fabric links in the sculpture.

“Join us during the month of October at one of our public workshops to make your mark on this massive sculpture!” The workshops are free and open to people of all ages. No prior art experience necessary. Paints, brushes and other supplies will be provided. Come prepared to have fun — and dress to make a mess. No RSVPs required.
