Thirty-six years ago, Chicanx and Latinx students came together to discuss the possibility of having a special graduation that would reflect their achievements and struggles at UC Davis. These students wished to develop a personal and culturally relevant opportunity for students to recognize their parents, family and significant others who contributed to their success at the university. The celebration brings together the entire community to acknowledge its significance in supporting our achievements. This event seeks to inspire younger siblings and family members by showing that Chicanx and Latinx students do succeed in college and can serve as positive role models.

The Filipinx Graduation Celebration is an annual ceremony honoring the personal and academic achievements of our graduating students who identify as Filipinx-American or who are friends of the Fil-Am community on campus. Filipinx are the second largest Asian American subgroup in California and yet make up only 4 percent of students at UC Davis. FilGrad serves as a platform to showcase our best and brightest of the university to our own community. Beyond honoring our graduating seniors, this celebration is inclusive of the community at large. Through the ceremony, we encourage younger students to pursue the same caliber of holistic achievement in higher education, personal growth and contribution to society beyond UC Davis.
